Root Canal & Endodontics in Virginia Beach, VA
What is Root Canal Therapy?
It is when a dentist removes the pulp of your tooth, which is affected by infection or decay. The pulp is the living tissue inside your teeth, which contains the nerves that are most likely causing you agonizing pain. The pulp may be dead or dying when our dentist removes it. Trauma, such as when you’re in an accident, can also damage the pulp.
Why Would I Need a Dental Root Canal Treatment?
When a tooth is badly infected or decayed, a root canal is the only way to save the tooth. If the tooth’s pulp is infected, the infection can spread if you don’t have the procedure or have the tooth extracted. You should avoid getting a tooth extracted unless it is absolutely necessary, as implants and bridges are more expensive than root canals.
Do I Need to See a Special Root Canal Dentist?
Our family dentist can handle all but the most complicated procedures. In cases where the root canal procedure is complicated, our dentist will refer you to an endodontist, which is a root canal specialist. Call our office to arrange an appointment with our dentist who is experienced at performing root canals.
What are the Steps in a Dental Root Canal?
The first step is to prepare your mouth by numbing the area and placing a rubber dam around the location where the dentist will work in order to keep the area clean. Our dentist drills a hole in the top of the tooth so he or she can reach the canals. Next, our dentist cleans the canals and then fills them with a special material. After that, our dentist gives you a temporary filling to seal the hole in the crown of your tooth. Later on, you will most likely receive a root canal crown which will prevent the tooth from cracking, since it is more delicate after the procedure.
What Can I Expect My Root Canal Cost to Be?
Costs for root canals vary among patients; some procedures are more difficult than others. Your cost will also depend on whether the tooth is a molar and whether you have dental insurance that may cover a portion of the cost. Contact our office today to request an appointment, and then our dentist will let you know your cost after examining your tooth.
What are the Types of Root Canals?
Besides standard root canals for molars and front teeth, there are pediatric pulpotomies and pulpectomies for baby teeth. Dentists prefer to save baby teeth if possible. Additionally, there is the apicoectomy procedure, where the tip of the infected root is removed and then the root is sealed. An apicoectomy is used when the first root canal fails.
Do Root Canals Hurt Afterwards?
You may feel discomfort for a few days afterwards, but the procedure itself is not painful. Our dentist may prescribe an antibiotic or medication to reduce the swelling. You will also learn how to keep the area clean until the site heals. Call our office today if you have a toothache in order to schedule an appointment.
