We always try to save our patients natural teeth. Unfortunately, there are cases when teeth extractions are inescapable. When this happens the dental staff at our office will do their best to make the experience as quick and painless as possible. Generally, the majority of the time our patients spend in the chair is spent waiting for the local anesthetic to numb the area. The actual tooth extraction is a simple, very quick procedure that will be over before you know it.
After an examination, your dentist will tell you your tooth extraction cost based on how difficult he or she expects the extraction to be. Please let us know if you have dental insurance; we can check your coverage for you. Please call us to schedule your exam and find out what your extraction will cost.
You will need a surgical tooth extraction when a tooth breaks off at the gum line or it has not emerged yet.
The primary reasons a tooth has to come out include decay, infection, periodontal disease or problems with wisdom teeth. Our dentist will try to save your tooth if possible but in some cases, it is unavoidable, like in cases of severe decay or impacted wisdom teeth.
If your tooth experiences trauma or has such severe decay that it cannot be saved with a root canal, our dentist will suggest an extraction.
Sometimes baby teeth don’t fall out when they should, so they block the adult teeth from emerging. A dentist would also extract an infected or injured baby tooth. If you’re concerned about one of your child’s baby teeth, call our office to schedule an exam. Our dentist will only extract the tooth if it is necessary.
With advanced gum disease, teeth become loose by themselves. They will either fall out on their own or our dentist will suggest an extraction.
Wisdom teeth can cause a number of problems if they emerge at an angle or they are damaging nearby teeth, our dentist will remove the wisdom teeth if an uncomplicated extraction is possible. If your wisdom teeth do not emerge through your gums, our dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon if x-rays show they cannot grow in without causing problems.
Before getting braces or another orthodontic appliance, our dentist may need to perform a tooth removal procedure on one or two teeth, so there is room for the teeth to straighten out.
You will leave our office with gauze on the site to staunch the bleeding, which should stop in 30 minutes as a blood clot starts forming. After getting a tooth pulled, your dentist will provide a list of things you cannot do for a day or two that may disturb the clot. You will also receive instructions for pain relief and our dentist may prescribe antibiotics. Avoid any strenuous activity for 24 to 48 hours, or as directed.
Simple extraction sites typically heal within two weeks. Be careful brushing and eating until the site appears healed over, but your normal activities should not harm the tooth extraction healing process.
